Abstract: The transmission of E-mail over high-frequency (HF) radio channels is experiencing widespread use in the Government and military communities. This ability is made possible through the convergence of Internet and radio communication protocols, primarily by the implementation of transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP) for radio channels. One popular implementation is a software package called JNOS, initially developed by the amateur radio community. JNOS has been adapted for use over HF channels and has been demonstrated to perform at acceptable levels. It has not been characterized in a laboratory environment under known channel conditions. This report presents data that characterizes the performance of the HF E-mail system in a controlled environment, using HF channel simulators.
